Lakes College aims to provide a truly life-changing experience at the heart of west Cumbria.
The college engages with more than 700 employers and 1,000 learners and apprentices to offer the best possible preparation for the world of work.
All Lakes College, teaching staff are experts in the industry in which they teach, nurturing learners’ talents and helping them to fulfil their potential and develop skills and knowledge that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
The National College for Nuclear (NCfN) at Lakes College was created to meet the specific skills needs of the nuclear industry and has gone from strength-to-strength. NCfN has grown to offer dozens of courses, delivered through first-class facilities including nuclear labs and virtual reality.
The Civil Engineering Training Centre, which opened in October 2021, offers a purpose-built training facility to meet employers’ needs with learning involving heavy plant machinery.
One of the centre’s most impressive innovations is the ‘Big Rig’ – a training rig designed to provide hands-on experience of scenarios that individuals may come across during a career in the nuclear industry.
Lakes College also offer distance learning courses across a range of subjects including counselling skills, lean organisation management techniques, and nutrition and health. Flexible learning in this way goes to ensuring that a learners’ location does not have to be a barrier to education and growth.
The Skillshub at Lakes College is designed to put employers at the heart of education and training in Cumbria.
Officially opened in June 2022 by Suzanne Caldwell, managing director at Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, and Jo Lappin, chief executive at Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership, the centre offers a professional meeting place for local and national employers and apprentices, with uses ranging from a hub for small and one-to-one business meetings to a comfortable place to work on accounts or planning applications.

Visit the Lakes College siteThe collaboration we have with the college and how closely we have worked together has been very pleasing. It’s great to know that apprentices are gaining a great understanding of the work involved in EHSQ.
